A cappuccino with a smooth layer of frothy milk and the bitter taste of coffee is one of the favorite drinks of many coffee enthusiasts. With just two basic Barista skills: espresso extraction and milk frothing, you can make yourself a delicious and fragrant Cappuccino.
What is Cappuccino?
Cappuccino is a traditional Italian coffee consisting of espresso, hot milk, and a top layer of frothy milk in equal proportions. Unlike a Latte, a Cappuccino has a thicker layer of froth but less coffee.
The name "Cappuccino" in Italian means "small cap" or "hood", referring to the frothy milk layer on top of the mix of espresso and hot milk below. According to historical accounts, the name originated from the color of the attire worn by Capuchin friars. They often dressed in a simple light brown robe with a hooded cloak draped over their heads.
The composition of a Cappuccino
Cappuccino is usually made using an espresso machine. Two shots of espresso are poured first, followed by a layer of hot milk in the same amount as the espresso (the milk is frothed using the steam wand of the espresso machine).
This smooth layer of frothy milk consists of many tiny microbubbles, making the milk lighter and thicker. If the espresso extraction is done perfectly, the smooth milk froth will be retained at the top of the cup, blending with the Cappuccino mixture below.
On top of a Cappuccino, you can add a decorative layer of froth sprinkled with a bit of cocoa powder or cinnamon.
Recipe for a classic Italian Cappuccino
Ingredients:
18g - 21g of finely ground dark roasted coffee beans (for 2 shots of espresso)
60ml water
60ml frothed milk (whole milk is typically used)
Instructions:
(Read the espresso machine user manual carefully before proceeding)
Step 1: Make 2 shots of espresso using the espresso machine
Grind about 18g of coffee beans using a coffee grinder
Tamp the coffee grounds
Attach the filter basket to the group head for espresso extraction
Press the button and wait for about 20-25 seconds for the espresso to extract
Step 2: Froth the milk
Pour the milk into a stainless steel milk pitcher
Position the steam wand correctly
Froth the milk by moving the pitcher up, down, farther, and closer to allow air to incorporate and create a layer of foam.
The froth bubbles should become smaller as you froth. T
urn off the steam wand when the milk has doubled in volume and is heated.
Step 3: Pour the frothed milk over the espresso
Pour the frothed milk slowly onto the surface of the espresso to create three layers: espresso, hot milk, and froth in equal proportions.
Optionally, sprinkle some cocoa powder or cinnamon to add flavor and appeal to your Cappuccino.
Now you have a rich and creamy Cappuccino ready to enjoy with your family and friends. What could be better than savoring a cup of coffee that you made yourself, along with your loved ones! Save the recipe and give it a try today!
