According to a study published in the journal Hepatology, patients infected with HIV and hepatitis C reduce their risk of death by drinking coffee every day.
The study analyzed data of 1,028 patients with HIV and hepatitis C virus infection during 5 years in France, of which a quarter of patients drank at least 3 cups of coffee per day.
Through this data, scientists have concluded that patients who drink at least 3 cups of coffee a day and do not smoke can reduce the risk of death by 50%. Coffee contains polyphenols that help fight inflammation and prevent enzymes that damage the liver from developing.
Drinking at least 3 cups of coffee a day works well for HIV and hepatitis C co-infected patients
Dr. Salmon-Céron, a member of the research team, said that HIV-infected patients with hepatitis C have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes complications. In addition, HIV virus will promote the development of hepatitis into cirrhosis, liver cancer.
This study highlights how important it is that drinking coffee, not smoking, helps patients reduce their risk of death. Dr. Salmon-Céron said that this finding confirms the effect of an active lifestyle and behavior change in HIV-infected patients even without HIV virus.
In 2013, a study by Dr. Carlo La Vecchia, University of Milan, Italy, showed that drinking 3 cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of liver cancer by 50%.
